Reversible Canvas Tote With No Lining

 

 

Tote bag I made pattern before, here , finally done. Its final dimension is length 20cm, height 23cm, and depth 10cm. But instead of making the bag from 5 pieces of  fabrics, I decided to make it from 3 pieces of fabrics. I also add zipper pocket and 2 slip on pockets as well at the gusset.

Since the beginning, I planned to not using lining for this bag. I didn't want to use bias tape as well. But, I found out that the seam is too bulky. And I believe it will be hard to sew with portable sewing machine. So, by the end of the process I add bias tape to cover raw edges. 

Here's the final supplies:

- Webbing 2,5cm (1")  length: 46cm (16,53") : 65cm (25,6") ; 120cm (47,2")

- zipper length 20cm (7,87") = 1 pc

- fabric bias tape 138cm (54,3")

- button dia 2cm (0,8") = 2 pcs

- D ring 2,5cm 2 pcs

- Swivel hooks 2,5cm 2 pcs

- Rectangular slider 2,5cm 1 pc

- elastic band for button 10cm

How to Make Tote Bag Patterns

 Last night, a friend asked me how to make a pattern for a simple tote bag. Her customer asked a tote bag, refers to Marhaen Bag, but in different size. Smaller. For reference, she screenshot the final dimension of the bag as required.
Well, I myself, loooove making patterns. For the type of the bag she asked, I could say there are three ways to breakdown the panels.

First, as an ordinary tote, we can make it from 1 piece or 2 pieces of exterior. Boxing the corner to make the base of the bag. When we should use 1 piece of fabric or two, it depends on the dimension of the bag and stock of our fabric. For an example, a tote in final dimension 30 cm (height), 25 cm (width), and 15 cm ( height) will require 77 cm x 42 cm. Include 1 cm seam allowance. Of course it will be more economical if we can cut it into 2 piece.

Second way is, breakdown it into 5 panels refer to all sides of the bag; front, back, sides, and base.

Third, make it from 3 panel only. Front panel, back panel, and gusset (two sides and base as well).
